About
Hillbrook Anglican School undertook an energy management upgrade across its Queensland campus with a focus on bringing disparate existing systems onto a single, maintainable platform. Three buildings carrying ageing and redundant BMS equipment were retrofitted as part of the project, with new systems added alongside rather than in place of functional existing infrastructure.
Bar-Tech Automation installed 20 energy meters to give the school a site-wide view of electricity consumption, complemented by HLI interfaces connecting the campus VRF air conditioning systems to OpenBMCS. Solar energy generation and the existing security system were also integrated into the platform, reducing the number of separate interfaces the facilities team needs to monitor on a daily basis.
A particularly distinctive element of the project is a dedicated student training server, a separate OpenBMCS instance that gives students and teaching staff access to live energy consumption data as a learning tool. This turns the BMS infrastructure into an active part of the school’s sustainability curriculum, allowing students to observe the real-world relationship between building use patterns and energy demand.
Project Scope
- 20 energy meters installed across the campus for whole-of-site consumption visibility
- Retrofit of redundant BMS systems across 3 buildings onto a common OpenBMCS platform
- HLI interfaces connecting existing VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) systems to the BMS
- Solar energy system integration for renewable generation monitoring alongside HVAC data
- Security system integration combined into the single OpenBMCS interface
- Dedicated student training server providing energy awareness data for classroom use
